The Gentleman's Guide

Footwear

Shoes are the first thing many notice and the last thing most consider. Great footwear speaks quietly and carries your entire outfit with authority.

Principles

The rules of exceptional footwear

Match Shoe Formality to the Outfit

Footwear sets the register of any outfit. A fine suit is undermined by overly casual shoes; a casual outfit is elevated by clean, quality leather.

  • Oxfords under suits, loafers under chinos
  • Chelsea boots bridge smart and casual
  • Never wear trainers with tailoring unless intentional

Invest in Leather and Care for It

Quality leather shoes, properly maintained, will last decades. The investment compounds with every clean and polish.

  • Cedar shoe trees preserve shape and absorb moisture
  • Polish every few wears, condition every month
  • Rotate pairs — never wear the same shoe two days running

The Two-Shoe Rule

If you can only own two pairs of quality shoes, make them a black Oxford and a tan/cognac Derby or loafer. These two cover 90% of occasions.

  • Black Oxford for formal and business
  • Tan loafer or Derby for everything else
  • Add Chelsea boots as the third for cold months

Sneakers in the Modern Wardrobe

Clean, minimal white sneakers have earned a legitimate place in smart-casual dressing. The key is cleanliness and restraint.

  • Plain white leather only — no logos or colour blocking
  • Pair with dark chinos or tailored trousers
  • Replace when they lose their crisp appearance
