Accessories
The belt is the most underestimated accessory. A mismatch between shoe and belt leather is among the first things a discerning eye catches. It is also the easiest thing to get right.
Overview
Leather accessories — belt, wallet, card holder, briefcase — must work as a coherent group. They need not match exactly, but they should belong to the same tonal family. A tan belt with a black wallet and black shoes is a disconnected outfit, even if all three pieces are excellent in isolation.
Principles
Belt width is dictated by the trouser loops and the occasion. A formal trouser demands a narrow belt; casual trousers allow more width.
The traditional rule — match belt to shoes — remains the safest and most elegant choice. Deviation requires confidence and context.
A man needs three belts: black dress, brown dress, and one casual. With these three, every outfit from black tie to weekend is covered.
The Sartorial Standard
Match the leather, and half the work of dressing well is already done.
