Underwear

Underwear is not visible, but it is never irrelevant. The first layer sets the comfort, shape, and confidence of everything worn above it.

Overview

The foundation garment

A well-dressed man starts with what no one sees. Good underwear supports the body, protects the clothes above it, and disappears under tailoring. The goal is quiet competence: breathable fabric, disciplined fit, and no unnecessary branding.

Principles

Fabric, support, and replacement

Fabric First

Underwear sits closest to the body, so fabric quality matters more here than almost anywhere else. Breathability, softness, and recovery are non-negotiable.

  • Cotton jersey for everyday reliability
  • Modal or lyocell for softness and drape
  • Avoid cheap synthetics that trap heat and odour

Fit & Support

The right pair should stay in place without compression, bunching, or visible disruption under trousers. Support should feel secure, never restrictive.

  • Boxer briefs are the most versatile daily choice
  • Waistbands should sit flat without rolling
  • Leg openings should not ride up under tailored trousers

Replacement Discipline

Underwear has a shorter useful life than most wardrobe pieces. Once elasticity, shape, or colour fades, replace it without sentiment.

  • Retire pairs with stretched waistbands
  • Keep colours simple: white, grey, navy, black
  • Refresh the core rotation at least annually

The Sartorial Standard

The least visible garment can still determine how everything else sits.
